If you’re ready to apply for a social security card, there are a few simple steps you need to know. On the plus side, the Social Security Administration tries to make it a very straightforward process. On the down side, if you don’t have your ducks in a row, your application is likely to be sent back for adjustments.
So, follow these steps to complete your social security card application, and move more efficiently.
First, be prepared to include documentation that is evidence of your age, such as a passport or birth certificate, as well as evidence of your identity, including a U.S. driver’s license, U.S. state-issued non-driver identity card, or a U.S. passport. As well, you’ll need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship by presenting a U.S Passport or Certificate of Naturalization. If you are applying as an immigrant, you will also need to provide Form I-551, I-94.
Don’t forget that all documents must be in their original form, not merely notarized photocopies!
Next, download the social security card application by visiting this link. Fill in sections 1-18 to the best of your knowledge either right on the computer or, after printing, in blue or black ink.
Do keep in mind that providing information on your race and ethnicity in section 7 is completely voluntary. Be sure to list an address in section 16 where your social security card can be sent in approximately 1-2 weeks. Finally, don’t forget to leave your John Hancock in section 17. An unsigned social security card application is certain to be denied.
Many often ask whether they can apply online for a social security card. At this time, the SSA requires that the social security card application be printed out and mailed or personally delivered to your regional SSA office.
